Srinagar: Senior most Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was on Thrusday laid to rest in the wee hours at a local graveyard in Hyderpora area of Srinagar district amid tight security.
Sources said that the burial of Geelani was completed by 4:45 am in presence of his relatives and neighbours in Hyderpora graveyard.
Geelani, the face of separatism in Kashmir for over three decades, died at his home in Srinagar on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 91. Geelani spent around two decades in jail. He was largely confined to his residence because of ill-health since 2010. He was put under house arrest again ahead of the controversial nullification of Jammu and Kashmir’s semi-autonomous status in 2019 and released last year.
Meanwhile strict restrictions have been placed while as Mobile Data as well Voice calling has been snapped across Valley except BSNL network.
Mainstream politicians including Mehbooba Mufti and Sajd Lone conveyed their condolence to the bereaved family.

“Saddened by the news of Geelani sahab’s passing away. We may not have agreed on most things but I respect him for his steadfastness & standing by his beliefs. May Allah Ta’aala grant him jannat & condolences to his family & well wishers,”, Mehbooba, former Chief Minister of erstwhile J&K state and PDP chief said.
Sajad Lone, chairman of Peoples Conference and former minister in a tweet said: ““Heartfelt condolences to the family of Syed Ali Shah Geelani Sahib. Was an esteemed colleague of my late father. May Allah grant him Jannat.”
