Reasi: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday arrested six people in Reasi district and claimed to have foiled a major bid to smuggle bovines to Kashmir Valley’s Kulgam district.
Giving details, sources said that a police team following specific information negotiated steep hill slops for more than two ours in Bandey Narh area of Mahore and arrested three notorious bovine smuggles. Identified as Nazir Ahed, Sadiq Husain and Aijaz Ahmed, all residents of Channa in Chassana tehsil, sources said that police rescued 26bouvines from their possession.
In another incident, a police team intercept a notorious bovine smuggler Noor Hussain of Thillo in the same area and rescued 13 bovines from his possession.
Ten other bovines were rescued from the possession of Aijaz Ahmed and Mohammad Iqbal, both notorious bovine smugglers from Sungri area.
Pointing out that Mohammad Iqbal was a habitual bovine smuggler, police said that the rescued bovines were brought to one place from different locations in one or two numbers, for taking them to Kashmir Valley through mountain passes on foot.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, Shailender Singh is seeking day to day report from police stations to ensure that bovine smuggling is stalled without any hassle for the genuine seasonal movement of nomads (Gujjars and Bakerwals) from Reasi district. In the current season of nomads movement, police in the district have rescued 161 cattle in 20 cases and arrested 29 accused during the last 2 months.
