Jammu: University of Jammu deeply condoles the passing away of Prof. Kasturi Lal Chopra, the Chancellor’s nominee for various selection Committees of Jammu University. He was a distinguished physicist and an administrator besides being Padmashri awardee.
Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu said that University truly benefitted from his rich experience and advice on various subjects and it is very difficult to fill this void.
It is pertinent to mention here that Prof. Chopra was recipient of several awards including SS Bhatnagar award.
He had a Ph D in Low Temperature Physics from the University of British Columbia in 1957. In 1970, he returned to India and joined IIT Delhi as Senior Professor of Solid State Physics and later became Head of Physics Department. He served as Director, IIT Kharagpur for a decade.
Professor Chopra had set up the Thin Film and Microscience laboratories at IIT-D and IIT-KGP respectively and contributed greatly to the field of thin films, energy and nano matter. He published over 430 papers in international journals, authored /edited ten books and supervised 100 M Tech. and 60 PhD Theses. Prof. Chopra held six US patents. The Jammu university fraternity comprising of teaching and non-teaching staff, Officers, scholars and students paid tributes to the departed soul and expressed solidarity with the aggrieved family in this hour of grief.
