Jammu: The earth in entire North India shook on Friday night after an earthquake of the magnitude of 6.3 at Richter scale hit Tajakistan around 10.34 pm, triggering panic among people who rushed outside their homes at many places in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to National Centre for Seismology, the high-intensity earthquake occurred 22:34:40 IST. The earthquake had a depth of 74 kilometres and its epicentre was Tajakistan at latitude 30.00 degrees North and longitude 73.58 degrees East.
There was no immediate report of any damage, but reports from various places said that people ran out of their houses in panic.
Jammu Kashmir National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Not since the earthquake of 2005 have the tremors in Srinagar been bad enough to force me out of the house. I grabbed a blanket & ran. I didn’t remember to take my phone & so was unable to tweet “earthquake” while the damn ground was shaking’’.
