Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday unearthed an inter-state gang involved into the smuggling of narcotics and weapons and arrested seven people from different parts of the Union Territory and neighbouring Punjab
Identified as Jash Raj Singh of Sai Kalan, Subash Chander of Sai Phagala, Sham Lal alias Shama of Arnia, Gurbakash Singh of Bhour Camp Gadigarh Satwari, Bishan Dass alias Raju of Gharkhal Camp Akhnoor, Ajit Kumar alias Kala of Khour (at present Laswara), and Guru Partap Singh of Punjab’s Taran Taran in Amritsar district, Inspector General of Police for Jammu zone, Mukesh Singh, said that they were arrested during simultaneous raids at various places by the special police teams.
Giving details, he said that a joint patrol party of J&K Police and Border Security Force had on the intervening night of September 19-20 this year foiled a smuggling bid at Bullay Chak near BSF’s Budhwar Post along the international border in Arnia sector of Jammu district and seized 61 packets of heroin, one packet of opium, two pistols, three magazines and 100 live cartridges. A case was registered at Arnia police station and investigations taken up in the matter, IGP pointed.
During investigation, it was found that Jash Raj Singh and Subash Chander, at the behest of Sham Lal @ Shama, had gone to zero line near Budhwar BSF Post on that night to collect the consignment of narcotics and weapons sent by unidentified Pakistani smugglers from across the border. However, in the meantime, the BSF troops noticed their suspicious movement, but Pakistani Rangers opened fire to cover them. The BSF retaliated and taking advantage of darkness, both Jash Raj and Subash Chander fled during the exchange of fire leaving behind the consignment.
Pointing out that the accused were nabbed by special police teams who conducted simultaneous raids at different locations in Jammu Kashmir and Punjab, IG Jammu said that the accused confessed their involvement in the instant case and revealed Jash Raj Singh and Inder Singh used to collect the consignment of narcotics and weapons dropped on Indian side from across the border and hand it over to Sham Lal alias Shama of Arnia.
Sham Lal in turn used to hand it over to Ajeet Kumar and Bishan Dass, who further delivered it to Guru Partap Singh of Taran Taran. In lieu of it, they used to get Rs two lakh per packet from him, IGP said, adding that the high profile case of cross border smuggling of narcotics and arms has been worked out by police teams comprising Inspector Harjeet Singh and Inspector Jai Paul Sharma, SHOs of Arnia and R S Pura police stations, respectively, under the supervision of Raja Adil Hamid SP Headquarters Jammu and Shridhar Patil , SSP Jammu. The investigations in the case are still in progress and more arrest and recoveries are expected in near future, he added.
