Lucknow: UP Police have arrested eight people in Lucknow’s Ghazipur area and seized from the. 340 suspected radioactive substance californium.
The accused have been identified as Mahesh Kumar, Ravi Shankar, Amit Kumar, Shital Gupta, Abhishek Chakravarty, Harish Chowdhury, Ramesh Tiwari and Shyam Sundar.
The arrests came when police stopped the accused for checking near Polytechnic Crossing on Thursday and found them in possession of suspected radioactive substance.
During questioning, they told the pllice that the substance was used in treatment of cancer.
“If it is Californium, it can be worth crores of rupees,” a senior police officer told agencies. However, it is being sent to IIT Kanpur for verification.
The investigations in the matter are in progress with police trying to find out from where they had procured it.
