JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 7: Minutes after his suspension pending an enquiry into a complaint lodged by some female students against him, a Jammu University professor of Wednesday evening allegedly committed suicide in his office room in the Psychology Department on the campus of Jammu University here.
Identifying him as Associate Professor Chander Shekhar of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, sources said that after video recording statements of the complainant students over the past 3-4 days, the department’s internal enquiry committee had on Wednesday recommended to suspend him and also disassociate him from teaching pending outcome of final inquiry into the matter.
However, as the deceased came to know about it, he even before receiving the suspension order, locked himself inside his office room around 4.00 pm. After some time, when University’s security staff broke opened the doors, they found him hanging from the ceiling of the room.
The deceased had been teaching on the campus for the past nearly 15-16 years. He was married and he had been living in residential quartars on the campus.
The police have registered a case and started investigations.
