Amarnath pilgrims halted at safe places as rains trigger floods

SRINAGAR, JULY 26: Acting swiftly, the UT administration on Tuesday sounded an alert and evacuated more than 4,000 pilgrims as heavy rains on higher reaches around Amarnath shrine in South Kashmir Himalayas triggered flash floods in the afternoon.

Pointing out that the situation was under control and the pilgrims had been taken out of the area to safer places, sources said that pilgrims on way to the holy cave too have been stopped at safer locations for the time being.

Sixteen pilgrims had died in cloud burst near the cave shrine on July 8. The UT’s Lt Governor Manoj Sinha had announced that that the pilgrims have been insured with Rs five lakh and the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident would be provided an additional Rs  five lakh.
