EC Agriculture LAHDC Leh flags off 1st consignment of fresh vegetables for winter

Leh: Executive Councillor, Agriculture in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council for Leh district, Stanzin Chosphel on Monday flagged off the first consignment of the fresh supply of vegetables for the winter from the cold storage facility at Dambuchan in Leh today.

A total of 8 tonnes of vegetables were procured by the Department of Cooperative, Ladakh for Leh district. These were later sent to Cooperative Marketing Society (CMS), Nimoo and CMS Leh for further distribution in villages such as Basgo, Nimoo, Khaltse, Shey, Thiksey and Ranbirpur. Fresh vegetables would be provided at a nominal price by the Cooperative Department.

The flag-off event was attended by Deputy Registrar Cooperative (DRC), Leh, Dr Mohammad Abbas; Assistant Registrar Cooperative (ARC), Leh, Skarma Tashi, and other concerned officials of the department.

Owing to the current pandemic and following the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of Covid-19, the department is distributing vegetables at village-level under the supervision of the nambardar and members of the villages. The vegetables would be distributed through Cooperative Marketing Societies (CMSs) and Bami Duniya Cooperative Store (BDCS).

Speaking on the occasion, EC, Agriculture, Stanzin Chosphel shared that provisions have been made to receive consignments twice a week which increases the quantity to 16 tonnes and would be distributed among all blocks of Leh district. He assured that all the villages would be covered under this programme starting today till mid-March through a planned distribution system.

Highlighting the role of the Cooperative Department, Dr Abbas shared that the department has been working tirelessly to provide fresh vegetables to the public during the winter. He added that the quantity of winter fresh supply has increased to eight tonnes under the UT government.
