Jammu: One militant was killed, while an Army JCO got martyred during an encounter between two sides on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir’s border Rajouri district.
While the identity of the martyred JCO was yet to be known, sources said that the security forces established contact with militants during searches in the area during morning. The searches had been going on in the area since yesterday following reports about movement of some suspicious persons.
As the searches were in progress, militants hiding in the area opened fire on security forces making them to retaliate. One militant was killed.
A JCO, Subedar Ram Singh, 46, from Uttrakhand’s Garhwal district, was also martyred. A brave and highly motivated soldier, he is survived by his wife, son and a daughter. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty, an official statement here said.
Earlier, on August 6, security forces and Jammu Kashmir Police had in a joint operation killed two militants including a Pakistani in Thanamandi’s Pangai area. The slain militants were part of a 3-4 member group which had freshly infiltrated into the border district from across the Line of Control.
There has been spurt in militants’ infiltration attempts from Pakistan side into the border district in view of the growth of dense foliage in forests along the LoC during rainy season. The grown up paddy fields are also providing an ideal cover to militant movement from one place to another.
Militants had on August 12 night hurled a hand grenade at the residence of a local BJP leader in Rajouri town’s Khandali area killing a 2-year old child and injuring half a dozen other family members.
