Protests in Jammu after man’s death in alleged beating by cops

JAMMU, JULY 29: A 27-year-old electrician, Shibam Sharma, died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday evening after he, according to grieved family members, was allegedly beaten up by a police party in Bantalab area on the outskirts of Jammu city, sparking protest by his family members and relatives.

The protestors held dharna on the road on Monday demanding inquiry into the matter and strict action against the erring policemen.

The police party, according to sources, had conducted raid in the area in search of drug paddlers. 

He was playing cricket near his house when the police raided the area, the grieved family members alleged.

The raiding party detained him on the spot and beat him severely before leaving the spot, they said, adding that he was rushed to the hospital where he breathed his last.

Senior police and civil officers reached there and persuaded the protesters to disperse, assuring an investigation into the matter.
