JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 6: Breaking an over an year long peace pact between two neighbouring countries, the Pakistani Rangers on Tuesday resorted to unprovoked firing on a BSF patrol along the international border in Jammu district’s Arnia sector.

A BSF spokesperson confirmed that Pakistani Rangers resorted to unprovoked fire on BSF patrol in the area on September 6 morning.  The BSF troops retaliated giving a befitting reply to the Rangers, he said, adding that there had been no loss of life or injury on the other side.

The latest firing by Rangers is the first incident of ceasefire violation along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir ever since both sides had in February 2021 agreed to maintain ceasefire between them.

There have, however, been infiltration attempts by militants and also dropping of weapons through drones from across the border from time to time.

Later in the day, both sides held a flag meeting in the border and “agreed to exercise maximum restraint’’. “A coy (company) commander level  flag meeting was held between BSF and Pak Rangers at 1.45 pm on the border in which the issue of unprovoked firing was discussed,’’ a BSF spokesperson said, adding that “both sides agreed to respect the existing norms in future’’. The meeting ended in cordial atmosphere, he added.
