10 killed following cloud burst at Amarnath shrine; rescue ops in progress

SRINAGAR, JULY 8: At least ten people were killed and many more are reportedly missing following a cloudburst at holy Amarnath cave in South Kashmir Himalayas on Friday evening.

NDRF Director General Atul Karwal said that ten casualties have been reported so far, while three people have been rescued alive. Pointing out that one NDRF team is always deployed at the holy cave and it immediately engaged in the rescue work. One more team has been deployed there and another is on the way, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted “Anguished by the cloud burst near Shree Amarnath cave. Condolences to the bereave families’’.

PM spoke to the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and took stock of the situation, Rscue and relief operations are underway, he said, adding all possible assistance is being provided to the affected.

Home Minister Amit Shah also talked to Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to take stock of the situation following flash flood caused by cloudburst near Amarnath shrine. Pointing out that NDRF, CRPF, BSF and local administration have launched rescue operaion, he said “to protect lives of people is our priority’’. He wished for well being of all the pilgrims.
