JAMMU, APRIL 22: A Jammu Kashmir Police personnel was injured in the pre dawn Friday encounter between security forces and militants at Sunjwan near here.

Sources said that two militants believed to be foreigners and owing allegiance to Jaish-e-Mohammad were believed to be holed up in Jalabad area near Sunjwan Military Station. The encounter was in progress.

The encounter, which came two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit to J&K for a government programme after the abrogation of Article 370, followed searches by police and security forces in the area as part of their heightened vigil being maintained in view of the VVIP visit to the Union Territory.

The area around the encounter site has been sealed and more reinforcements sent there to neutralize militants at the earliest.

Sunjwan Military Station has been attacked by militants in the past as well. In 2018, three jaish-e-Mohammad militants had entered into the camp from Jalabad area killing some soldiers and civilians. The attack was second as the militants had earlier entered the camp in 2003 from the same area killing a number of soldiers.
