Four Poonch youth held for killing peacock in Akhnoor

JAMMU, JANUARY 6: The Jammu Kashmir Police on Thursday arrested four people for allegedly killing a peacock at Karkoi village in Akhnoor.

Identifying them as Ishtiyaq Ahmed, Safdar Hussain, Mohammad Farooq and Mohammad Tazeem, all residents of Poonch district’s Mendhar area, sources said that they had travelled all the way from their native place to Akhnoor for hunting. 

However, some local people noticed them killing a peacock and raised alarm, The hunters hurriedly put the bird in the vehicle and drove towards Poonch side.

The villagers chased them and also informed the local police. The hunters were finally intercepted 15 km away at Hanuman Chowk.

The dead peacock along with a double barrel gun was seized from their possession. The vehicle in which they were travelling has also been seized, sources said, adding that a case under sections 9/51 of the Wild Life Act read with 3/25 of Arms Act and 429/34 of Indian Penal Code has been registered against them.
