JAMMU, NOVEMBER 30: In another first of its kind, Heart Valve was replaced in a 40 year old female patient in the Department of CTVS in the Government Medical College, Jammu through minimal access method through a small incision (cut) in the crease(fold) below right breast and opening the chest in between ribs without causing any chest instability as the breast bone was left intact.
This technique causes less bleeding and thus less need of blood transfusion , besides less pain and is cosmetically superior as the incision scar is fine and hides in breast crease.
Procedure of Mitral valve replacement through anterior thoracotomy using conventional operative equipment and set of instruments , was first of its kind carried out in Govt Medical college Jammu, an official statement here said.
The patient was sick with breathlessness and her heart beats were irregular and chaotic because her heart valve was narrowed and leaking. She also had low haemoglobin of 7.6 grams and low protein.
She was optimised in Intensive Care Unit of the Super Speciality Hospital before taking up for Mitral Valve replacement. The Ayushman Bharat Scheme covered the expenses for the equipment and drugs used during surgery and postoperative period.
The surgical team comprised of Dr Shyam Singh ( Surgeon ) with Dr I.A Mir (Co-Surgeon) and assisted by Dr Rauf and Dr Amit Thapa. Other colleagues Dr Arvind Kohli , Dr Mohit Arora, Dr Vivek Gandotra and Dr Javed also helped in the procedure.
Cardiac Anaesthesia was conducted by Professor and Head Dr Puja Vimesh, Dr Rasmeet Kour, Dr Vikas Gupta who were assisted by Senior Cardiac Anaesthesia technologist Shiv Karan Singh, Vikas Sharma, Arif, Sumit, Saleem, Karan Singh and Abhiranjan Kotwal.
Senior Perfusionists Chananjit Singh and Roshan Lal maintained the cardiopulmonary pump during the operation.
The operation theatre scrub sisters who helped in carrying out the novel technique of operation were Sapna Manhas and Vaishali and Operation theatre senior technician Girdhari Singh and O.T incharge Indu Khurdi.
The intraoperative and peri operative care in Intensive Care Unit SSH was managed by team of Cardiac Anaesthesia Residents Dr Aprajita, Dr Hitasha, Dr Sakshi and Cardiac Surgery Residents Dr Abhishek Jasrotia,Dr Adnan ,Dr Shehwar, Dr Anil, Dr Anwar with active and alert ICU sisters Neetu, Zahida, Nayeem and Sister incharge ICU Tajinder Kour .
Principal Medical College Jammu Professor Dr Shashi Sudhan while visiting the patient Congratulated and applauded the team effort and stressed that the people should utilise these facilities at their doorsteps under Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
