Udhampur: Indian Air Force on Monday pressed its MI-17 helicopter to douse a massive forest fire in Gordhi area of Udhampur district’s Ramnagar tehsil of Jammu and Kashmmir.

This followed as the ill equipped skeleton forest department’s field staff and local villagers were finding it difficult to contain forest fire. The local police too had joined the fire fighting operation to contain fire from spreading to other areas.

With dry grass which is available in abundance in forests during scorching heat during summer providing fuel, the forest fire was fast spreading to other areas. Sources said that the administration’s main worry was to check it from reaching residential places located near the forests.

Only three days ago, a chemical factory was razed to ashes in Udhampur’s Battal Ballian area. The IAF, army troops had joined the fire fighting operations there as well.
